Designing the Identity of a Global Conservation Summit

Challenge:
The Department of Fisheries and Marine Research, under the Ministry of Agriculture, partnered with Summercliff to develop the identity and promotional strategy for ICCAT 2024, an international conference held in Limassol, Cyprus. The event, organized by the International Committee for the Conservation of Cross Atlantic Tuna, required a professional, visually compelling identity that would resonate globally while reflecting the cultural and environmental essence of Cyprus.

Objectives:

  • Create a unique visual identity for ICCAT 2024 Conference held in Cyprus that encapsulates the themes of marine conservation, Cyprus’ cultural heritage, and global collaboration.
  • Develop a suite of promotional and event materials, including a logo, posters, videos, gifts, and conference screens, ensuring consistency and appeal.

Strategy:
Summercliff’s strategy focused on merging cultural representation with the environmental mission of ICCAT 2024. By incorporating elements of Cyprus’ heritage and the central theme of tuna conservation, the branding aimed to create an impactful and memorable identity.

Implementation:

  1. Logo Design:
    The ICCAT 2024 logo featured the following distinct elements:

    • The Tuna: Representing three key species of tuna, symbolizing the conference's focus on marine biodiversity.
    • Traditional Architecture: Inspired by the island's iconic arch-shaped structures, reflecting Cyprus’ cultural heritage.
    • The Sun: Signifying the Mediterranean setting
    • The Sea Waves: Showing the connection to marine life.
  2. Conference Materials: Summercliff developed posters, banners, and digital screens that extended the logo's themes, incorporating imagery of the tuna species and Cyprus’ coastal beauty.

  3. Promotional Gifts: Branded miniature sculptures featuring the logo were designed

  4. Video Production: Summercliff produced a captivating video that provided an engaging explanation of the conference logo's creation. The video detailed how the logo’s elements—the three fish species, Cyprus’ traditional arch-shaped architecture, and the Mediterranean sun and sea waves—symbolized the event’s themes of biodiversity, cultural heritage, and environmental stewardship. This creative narrative added depth to the conference identity and resonated with attendees and viewers worldwide.

Results:
The logo and branding became the cornerstone of ICCAT 2024 Conference’s identity, effectively communicating its mission while celebrating Cyprus’ unique heritage. Attendees appreciated the thoughtful integration of cultural and environmental elements, fostering a sense of connection to both the cause and the host location. The promotional materials and video received widespread praise, enhancing the conference’s visibility and impact.
